Neon Piss

May 25, 2012

For a really nice slice of gloomy punk, check out Portland quartet Neon Piss‘ two-song sampler taken from their upcoming self-titled debut 12″ EP release. A nice blend of classic punk rock, early New Wave and a dark feel similar to their fellow compatriots The Wipers, they manage to offer up some really nice hooks amid the desperation without sounding the least bit commercial or pretentious.

Perfectly executed, the band is tight and their songwriting skills hold a really high level making me pretty damn sure these guys are gonna make some big waves in the future. Vinyl versions will be released in the US (Deranged Records) and Europe (Cut The Cord That…) soon and right now you can download a total of six tracks for free so check them out!

Twin Crystals

January 19, 2012

I gotta admit, I’m a big sucker for The Wipers and Vancouver trio The Twin Crystals manage to blend the melancholic sounds of that legendary Portland group with some nice New Wave and general arty noise. On their ten-song demo collection Child Life they offer up a nice blend of songs;  some pure garage/punk tracks with a slight Nirvana feel, and some occasional “artsy” oddities – all from their forthcoming second album.

This is just great. If you are or were a fan of Greg Sage‘s previous outfit you just gotta give these guys a listen! There’s tons of vinyl records available, and four digital releases on Bandcamp. Check ’em out!

The Dualies

January 16, 2012

Aw, I’m smitten! San Fransisco trio The Dualies blend 80’s New Wave with 8-bit electronics, delivering super-cute modern electropop they call “dancy bitwave” that’s both catchy and charming in the process. Full of nice hooks with a low-key delivery their latest EP Handclaps & Zaps -released in the summer of 2011 – offers up three great-sounding tracks with semi-spoken female vocals.

I gotta admit, at first the combination struck me as a bit odd when I read the tags, but it only took a couple of seconds into the first song for me to get into the band’s sound. Two EP’s and one X-Mas single has been released so far, and all being available for free you should check these guys out!

Girlfriends And Boyfriends

December 19, 2011

Well, retro new wave certainly isn’t that new – Portland, OR outfit The Epoxies started as early as 2000 – but Canadian trio Girlfriends And Boyfriends offers up some nice 80’s electronic hooks on their new EP Young Ones. Lots of classic keyboard sounds (that’s pretty much a given) with some cool guitar work and a rhytmsection mixing Joy Division with a nice dancefloor feel. I’m hearing a bit of The Reds with some Talking Heads vocal delivery and unlike some other outfits emulating these sounds they offer up some nice variety on their material.

Released in December the band also offers one digital album available as a free download and the EP is available as a limited edition 7″.

Le Butcherettes

December 14, 2011

Mexican (?) garage new-wave trio Le Butcherettes might not need the exposure (they’re already receiving write-ups and coverage in LA Times, recently Henry Rollins himself raved about them, touring Australia right now opening for Omar Rodriguez Lopez Trio, and they recently earned a slot opening for Iggy & The Stooges!), but I instantly fell in love with their sound and music the very minute I heard it. A nice blend of garage and new wave delivering some great pop hooks without sounding blatantly commercial.

Vocalist Teri Gender Bender has got a great voice, sometimes bringing PJ Harvey to mind and they offered up so many good, varied tracks on their first album Sin Sin Sin, it was damn hard to choose just one, so do yourself a favor and make sure to check out all of them!
